Life Coaching

A young man failed out of high school. Having always been told he was stupid, he believed that he had reached the end of the line. He started working at odds and ends sorts of jobs, making just enough to live on. He wished for more, but didn’t know where or how to begin. Then, a coach entered his life. Having been educated on his options, the young man became determined to complete high school. By working along with his coach, he learned how to set goals and take steps to achieve them. His coach’s encouragement and direction pointed him along the path he needed to take to get his high school diploma.

A middle-aged woman was dissatisfied with her life. Sure, she had a job, a house, and a car. But her days were mundane and unfulfilling; the nine to five grind followed by an evening in front of the TV. She just couldn’t seem to find the energy or commitment to do anything more. Finally, she contacted a life coach. Not even sure what was missing from her life, she worked with her life coach to discover what she wanted. Next, she and her coach partnered to help her find ways to meet her goals. A few months later, she found her life filled with a new level of meaning and purpose.

These are just two typical scenarios of what life coaching can do for you. The term “life coaching” can seem a bit cloudy, but the concept is pretty simple. Basically, life coaching involves a client and coach partnering together to help the client define and reach his or her personal and professional potential.

A common myth is that life coaching is restricted to deadbeats or people who just can’t seem to cope with life. On the contrary, life coaching is a tool for people who want to become and achieve more. A life coach can work with a client in a whole realm of areas, such as relationships, time management, health, work-life balance, starting a business, social activity, getting a promotion, leadership, and simplifying life.

A good coach will first help you to look internally and discover what your dreams and desires are for your life. Next, he or she will help you figure out if there are any internal hurdles that are holding you back from achieving your goals. Then, the client works with the coach to take action steps to help them achieve their vision. Life coaching gets you from point A to B. It helps you to life a better, richer life. It enables you to create positive change in the areas where you want it.

A life coach is not like an advice-giving aunt or a bossy teacher. They don’t tell you what they want you to do; instead, they focus on your goals and desires. Unlike psychotherapy, which can be focused a lot on past issues and events, life coaching is oriented towards the future…towards making it brighter and better.

Life coaches ask you lots of questions to help you uncover your dreams. They help you set goals and access the tools you need to achieve those goals. They’re not afraid to challenge you and keep you accountable to the plans you’ve made, but they’ll also support and encourage you along the way.

If you’re looking to make positive change in your life, to change some of your gray days to sunny ones, to have fewer regrets and more accomplishments, then life coaching might be just what you need. At the very least, the positive, creative process of working with a coach will encourage and inspire you. At the most, you could find yourself achieving some of your lifelong dreams. After all, what do you have to lose?
